Rideau View member Brad Fritsch is off to his second U.S Open.

JUNE 9 2015

This time around, he said he feels a lot more prepared to handle what awaits him at the season's second major at Chambers Bay, Wash., next week.

Fritsch won a playoff to qualify for the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.. He posted rounds of 78-78 and missed the cut, making only one birdie in the 36 holes.

"I wasn't very good then. I was soaking it all in and if you asked me to hit a fairway with a 4-iron, I probably couldn't do it, I was so out of my element," Fritsch said.

"Now I feel like I can really compete and if I play well, good things can happen."

Fritsch made 13 birdies in 36 holes on his way to rounds of 69 and 67 at sectional qualifying Monday at Brookside Golf and Country Club and The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

His 8-under par total of 136 was good for a tie for seventh. There were 120 players competing for 15 spots.

"US Open baby!!!" Fritsch tweeted after receiving his invitation from the United States Golf Association.

Fritsch also qualified for the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

Fritsch made eight birdies in his morning roundMonday, but also had five bogeys.

"Sloppy sloppy sloppy -3 at The Lakes included 8 birdies. Gotta suck it up and play a good round at Brookside, the harder course. 18 to go," Fritsch tweeted after the morning round (you can follow him on Twitter @BradFritsch).

He had a bogey-free 67 in the afternoon and barged up the leaderboard.

Fritsch now has nine sub-70 rounds in his past 11 rounds between his play on the Web.com Tour and U.S. Open qualifying.

Fritsch is 42 under par for those past 11 rounds.

He is coming off a T8 at the Rex Hospital Open and a T27 at the Greater Dallas Open last weekend.

Chambers Bay, a links-style course, is an interesting choice to host the U.S. Open which typically has been played on the traditional, punishing parkland courses found mostly in the American northeast.

Winged Foot is the perfect example of the USGA's old philosophy of deep rough and lightning fast greens. The 1974 U.S. Open was dubbed "The Massacre at Winged Foot."

"We're not trying to embarrass the world's best players," said Sandy Tatum, the chair of the championship committee, "we're trying to identify them."

Fritsch said he's comfortable playing shots along the ground, often the best approach in links golf (he had three of them in his second round on Monday).

He said he doesn't mind the USGA taking a different approach to setting up the course.

"I thought they were maybe trying too hard last year with Pinehurst (No. 2) with no rough and the sandy areas with the little bushes," he said. "I played it when it had rough and I prefer that.

"But it's not a totally bad thing to think outside the box. Everything I've heard from the guys who have been there (to Chambers Bay) is they don't mind it all."

Fritsch will play the Web.com Tour event this week near Cleveland, Ohio, and hopes to head to Chambers Bay late Sunday night or early next Monday morning to get his first look at Chambers Bay.
